Hello Kitty Cafe Chicago: My Visit, What to Order and Is It Worth It

By Juancho · October 15, 2026

On Sunday, October 11, I was walking around downtown Chicago with my family when a pink awning on Michigan Avenue stopped us in our tracks: the Hello Kitty Cafe Chicago. It opened in June 2026, spreads over two floors and is billed as the largest Hello Kitty Cafe in the world. My son and my niece weren’t letting me walk past it, and as a barista I walked in with one question: does the coffee live up to the décor?

Hello Kitty Cafe Chicago: quick facts

Getting in

We got lucky. There’s a roped-off line outside, and on busy days people report waits of 25 minutes or more, but that Sunday we walked right in. There were about five people ahead of us at the register, service was quick, and we found a table as soon as our order was ready.

The first thing that hits you is the color: pink from floor to ceiling, a giant Hello Kitty bow over the counter and a Chicago skyline mural that’s begging for a photo.

The coffee: a barista’s take

The espresso was excellent: well balanced and genuinely good. I honestly didn’t expect that much from a themed cafe. You come for the experience and leave with a good coffee.

The one weak spot was the hand-off. Drinks are picked up at the counter on the left, with a virtual queue that calls you by order number. I saw an espresso just like mine sitting there, but the screen still said my order was pending, so I left it. It was mine. It sat on the counter for a while and, since it’s served in a paper to-go cup, it lost its heat fast. By the time I drank it, it was cold.

My tip: after you pay, wait near the pickup counter and check every cup. If you order espresso, drink it the moment it’s handed over.

You don’t come just for the coffee, but the espresso will surprise you.

Is it expensive?

Drinks are priced like any other Chicago coffee shop: a latte is $6. Desserts are where it gets pricey for the size: a cookie is $7 and a whole cake can run $20. They’re beautifully decorated and on theme, but yes, this isn’t a budget stop. Want to spend less? Grab just a drink and enjoy the space.

The shop and the capsule machines

On the way out there’s a shop with plushies, tumblers, mugs and Chicago-exclusive items. I didn’t buy anything, but there’s plenty people will want to take home. My son and niece’s favorite part was the capsule toy machines (gashapon): buy tokens, drop them in and out comes a surprise souvenir.

The Bow Room: Chicago’s secret

Downstairs is the Bow Room, a speakeasy-style lounge you’ll only find at this location, where they serve Afternoon Tea. It runs Wednesday through Sunday, by reservation only on Resy, and costs $100 per person plus a 20% service charge (checked on October 15, 2026). We skipped it this time, but it’s on my list for the next visit.

Can you work there?

No. There’s Wi-Fi and there are outlets, but it’s busy, lively and built for enjoying a short visit. Come, take in the décor, have something sweet, snap your photos and keep exploring. For laptop time, pick another cafe from my Chicago guide.

How to get to Hello Kitty Cafe Chicago

It sits where Michigan Avenue meets the Chicago River, on the ground floor of the LondonHouse hotel (360 N Michigan Ave), right next to the Michigan Avenue Bridge and the stairs down to the Riverwalk. On public transit, the Loop “L” trains drop you a few blocks away. Driving? The hotel offers valet (about $28 per Resy, checked on October 15, 2026), and there are paid garages nearby.

FAQ

What are Hello Kitty Cafe Chicago’s hours?

It’s open daily from 10 AM to 8 PM (checked on October 15, 2026). Double-check their Instagram before you go, especially on holidays.

Do you need a reservation or a ticket to get in?

No. Entry to the cafe is free and first come, first served. Only the Bow Room Afternoon Tea requires a Resy reservation.

How much is a coffee at Hello Kitty Cafe Chicago?

An americano is $5, a latte $6 and flavored lattes $7. The fall special, the apple pie vanilla latte, is $9. Desserts run from $7 to $20.

How long is the wait?

It depends on the day. We walked right in on a Sunday, but people report lines of 25 to 30 minutes. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter.

Is it good for kids?

Yes. My son and niece loved the Hello Kitty desserts and the token-operated capsule toy machines.

Is it really the world’s largest Hello Kitty Cafe?

That’s how the brand bills it: about 8,000 square feet over two floors, and the first one in the Midwest.

My verdict

If you’re visiting Chicago, or you live here and haven’t been yet, it’s worth the stop. The vibe is lovely, the drinks and desserts are delicious and the espresso surprised me. The only letdowns were dessert prices and the wait at pickup. Would I go back? Yes, and the Bow Room is next.

If you want an unforgettable experience, you have to visit this coffee shop.
